Top Gear – Turbo Classics

1. Also Sprach Zarathustra – R. Strauss.
Think 2001: a Space Odyssey. Great tune if you haven’t already heard it 50 billion times b4!
2. Ride of the Valkyries – Wagner.
Think Apocalypse Now. Ditto above comment.
3. The Planets (Mars) – Holst.
Un.believable. A powerful classic that is exhilarating to drive 2.
4. William Tell Overture – Rossini.
Think Robin Hood. Enjoyable driving song, with a hint of adventure.
5. Sabre Dance – Khachaturian.
Recognisable but not my favourite. Sounds a bit like the sort of thing Knights would dance to.
6. Carmina Burana (O Fortuna) – Orff.
Think that really Dark devilish scene in Fantasia. The sort of tune they put on TV programmes to scare people!
7. Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 (Land of Hope and Glory) – Elgar.
‘Land of hope and glory, Hitler’s in the Bath’ etc. As JC says on sleeve notes:
“Towering above the howl of a handbuilt V8 engine was Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance. It was a moment to treasure forever”
8. Symphony No 5 – Beethoven.
Dun, dun, dun, dur. I know that doesn’t do it justice, but is one of those songs you would recognise instantly. Absolute Genius!
9. The Firebird – Stravinsky.
Another slightly scary one, but great for driving to.
10. Grand March – Verdi.
Difficult to describe, but is a bizarre mix of scary female voice choir and hopeful classics like Handel’s Messiah.
11. Romeo and Juliet (Dance of the Knights) – Profokiev.
Fits in with ‘Firebird’ and ‘O Fortuna’ as a seriously scary track, but one that is compelling.
12. Lohengrin – Wagner.
Happy piece that is good for driving a Powerful but elegant car like a Jaguar or an Aston…
13. Requiem (Dies Irae) – Verdi.
Yet another scary power piece, very similar to ‘O Fortuna’, with lots of operatic female voices giving the impression of doom and gloom…
14. L’Arlesienne Suite – Bizet.
Another powerful elegance peace similar, in some ways, to the ‘William Tell overture’.
15. Symphonie Fantastique (March to the Scaffold) – Berlioz.
As the title suggests, a bit nihilistic (to begin), but in here for a reason – darkness before the dawn…
16. Messiah (Hallelujah Chorus) – Handel.
… And once again we are into the light and merry, with this unmistakable classic. If you think you don’t know it, imagine a choir singing ‘Hallelujah, Hallelujah’ as passionately as possible, and you will get the right impression!
17. 1812 Overture (Finale) – Tchaichovsky.
Just as every dance compilation of the nineties had to end with ‘Born Slippy’ by Underworld, every loud classical music album worth its salt ends with this song. Tchaichovsky hated it, but what would he know?
